Hi,I've just taken receipt of a Model 2 to use as a DAC in my study (using the ADC occasionally for recording live from a mic). I would like to feed the balanced XLR outputs of the Model 2 into the single-ended RCA inputs of my Berning Siegfried amp,...

Yes, I totally agree. In my old place, I had the Druids working in FR with the Berning Siegfried 300B, and they sounded exactly as you say.But I'm hoping that the Berning will cope better driving the Druids with a high-pass filter set to around 150Hz...

David got rid of transformer and replaced it with a DC transformer, claiming that it is “better”.
And I should point out that not only is there still a transformer in the circuit, but many other ...

The excellent post, morricab! There is secondary point in your post - the core saturation is not the fundamental problem of SETs but it is become an issue when we go for power. If you do not need to drive 92dB sensitive bass drivers with a 6W S...
Interesting perspective... [but] we are discussing the Siegfried in this thread or at least that was my impression.
Umm, the name of the thread is: DAVID BERNING AMPLIFIERS, dude, not Siegfried.
With re...
Secondly could you explain which characteristics of the recording are destroyed, and what mechanism David Berning uses to acheive this?
Actually it would be a reversed question to David Berning:
“What kind evaluation ...

For anyone who's interested, I run my SL600s with a Rotel RHB-10 power amp, very successfully, I think. I tried them with a number of SS amps, and none of them did the job quite like the Rotel.(I did buy a tube/valve amp for my main system though - a...

I have the Zu Druid's which Romy has referred to. I purchased the speaker's based on the presumption that their high sensitivity and impedance would be perfect to run SET amps. After having read the great success Arthur Salvatore had running the Fra...

There is one thing I don´t understand:Why is David Berning using masses of low voltage rectifiers instead of one vacuum diode rectifier?By doing this he´s got semiconductors in the signal path....
|
... my own feeling is that David Berning's solution is both neater and more practical - the only impediment ot it's acceptance, the dogmatic approach of many thermionic die hards. My experience suggests it's their loss.
...
Are your observations regarding the ZH270 relating to comparisons with other push pull designs or SET's?
Well, both push-pull and SET and also some transistor designs as well, as I used to be quite a fan of Nelson Pass an...

And I do not mean this as a criticism.I had for some time an "original" Music Reference RM9, which was made by another well-educated genius, Roger Modjeski. The RM9 was AB PP with adjustable bias and feedback/gain, with 6DJ8 drivers and a ...
[What I am interested if you observe with your Berning amplifiers, since they have UHF pulses on filaments and in UHF modulator instead of output transformer, the “Super Texture” effect.I would also it you do not mine would...

Welcome to the club:"Debuting the new Quadrate Z, David Berning was displaying a new amplifier designed to output 200 watts per channel. The design is comprised totally of tubes and incorporates ZOTL technology. The amplifier retails for $29,900."...

Sorry Paul but your post makes no sense.
Firstly one minute you were clearly unfamiliar with the circuit and amplifier in question, and now you are suddenly really au fait with it's sonic characteristics. Forgive me if that takes something of a qu...

Merlin, might I ask you if you can recognize anything from my post:
Sorry Romy - I've no idea what you are on about. Did you link to the wrong post by chance?
What I am interested if you observe with your Berning amplifiers, since they have UHF pulses on filaments and in UHF modulator ins...

This is very disappointing to hear. But in a way, it makes little difference to me. I had decided that I would only use the PP2000 from battery power when listening to music (or making vinyl transfers to digital). I've been playing the system this mor...
In fact you can model the great sound for very, very small rooms (headphones) with existing direct radiators, have great result and no need for horns.
Yes, this is exactly what I've attempted to do. The rooms in the ...

Wow! Paul, I have to say you really hit the nail on the head this time; whereas usually you strike me a bit more obliquely:
...the Berning ... makes the music happen as oposed to letting it happen...
This is exactly w...

Well,Berning is a genius to be sure. Here he fixed his sights on the "evil" output transformer. Every part of the circuit alters the sound somehow, of course, and the goal is to find the least damaging topology. The question is aske...

Well done that man.
The Berning Siegfried. A licenced version is I understand soon to be released by Western Electric, using their 300B....
|
Well, this certainly shrinks chassis size, if nothing else. I've never looked at the circuit, but there has to be some sort of transformer function at each end, up and down, and the easiest way to do this would be with transformers ;>). ...

Merlin, I have nothing against Bernings, in fact I found it all educational as I never had exposure to them. Well, perhaps I did hear them at some kind of hi-fi show but just did not paid attention. I hardly believe that I will hear Bernings as I’m l...

Shostakovich string quartets have long been favorites of mine as well. For years I listened to them and the Bach cello suites more than any other serious music. I tried to get into the symphonic works but it never seemed as profound...

Hi Romy,I agree with you, when an amplifier is fast and capable to response quickly to abrupt dynamic challenges, then the harmonic structure of the notes becomes sharpened, it loses richness and "texture" because they fade away too quickly and their...
Indeed the linearity of the Berning in comparison with the Lamm is quite remarkable, and indeed could be disconcerting to an inexperienced listener brought up on large increases on 2nd harmonic at the bottom end.

Merlin, won't you at least put your amp in some sort of meaningful context, because it is a waste to continue this thread if you just treat it like a pissing contest. What speakers do you use? What sources, etc?&nb...

Still, I would like in this thread to stay with subject of advantage/disadvantage of DSET approach vs. better/expensive SET: "A DSET is better then an expensive SET" instead of turn it into thread about David Berning. Bernings certainly might be...
